What drives the price of your move to Sweden

Volume

The cubic metres you move set the vehicle and crew. A two-bed flat typically costs 15 to 20 percent more than a one-bed flat on the same route.

Distance and route

Stockholm is about 1,100 km from Berlin and over 1,700 km from Munich. Routes use a ferry or the bridges via Denmark, both with fares or tolls.

Access at both addresses

Swedish apartment buildings usually have lifts, but older Stockholm buildings can have narrow stairwells. Space for the truck in the city centre has to be reserved.

Date and flexibility

Month-end and summer dates book out first. A flexible collection window makes it easier to plan the truck and lowers the price.

What is different about moving to Sweden

Ferry or bridge

The route goes either by ferry (for example Kiel to Gothenburg or Rostock to Trelleborg) or over the Great Belt and Øresund bridges. Both costs are part of the price.

Winter moves

Snow and short days from November to March can slow loading and add a day.

Personal identity number

If you plan to stay at least a year, register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to get a personnummer. You need it for most contracts.

No customs inside the EU

Moving within the EU needs no customs declaration for household goods.

From the UK

Moving to Sweden from the UK

Since Brexit a move from the UK to Sweden is a move from outside the EU. Your household goods go through customs, so you need a detailed inventory list.

The calculator also works for UK addresses. Enter your postcode as the start address.

Duty-free household goods

Used personal belongings are normally free of import duty under transfer of residence relief if Sweden becomes your main home.

The crossing

Most routes go via Calais or a North Sea ferry to the Netherlands and then north through Denmark, adding one to two days.

Part loads

For small volumes, sharing a truck with other moves lowers the price if your date is flexible.

How to lower the cost of removals to Sweden

Sort out before you pack

Every cubic metre you sell or donate is a cubic metre you do not pay to move.

Be flexible on dates

Mid-month and outside July and August is usually cheaper.

Pack yourself

A packing service saves time, but packing your own boxes lowers the price.

Get a fixed price

A fixed-price quote protects you from surprises on moving day.
