What drives the price of your move to France

Volume

The cubic metres you move set the vehicle and crew. A two-bed flat typically costs 15 to 20 percent more than a one-bed flat on the same route.

Distance and route

Paris is about 850 km from Munich and 1,050 km from Berlin. Most routes need one driving day plus loading and unloading. French motorway tolls are part of the price.

Access at both addresses

Paris flats are often on upper floors with small lifts. Large furniture may need an external furniture lift through the window, which adds to the price.

Date and flexibility

Month-end and summer dates book out first. A flexible collection window makes it easier to plan the truck and lowers the price.

What is different about moving to France

Temporary no-parking zone

Paris and other large cities issue a permit to reserve the kerb in front of your building for the moving truck. It is applied for about two weeks ahead and listed in the quote.

Furniture lifts

In Paris, sofas and wardrobes often go in through the window with an external lift (monte-meuble). Ask for it if your stairwell is narrow.

Small lifts and stairs

Check the size of the lift at your new address before moving day. It decides how long unloading takes.

Paperwork after arrival

EU citizens do not need a residence permit, but you should register with the French health system and update your address with your bank and insurers.

From the UK

Moving to France from the UK

Since Brexit a move from the UK to France is a move from outside the EU. Your household goods go through customs, so you need a detailed inventory list.

The calculator also works for UK addresses. Enter your postcode as the start address.

Duty-free household goods

Used personal belongings are normally free of import duty under transfer of residence relief if France becomes your main home.

The Channel crossing

The short crossing from Dover to Calais or via the Eurotunnel adds a fare but rarely more than half a day.

Part loads

For small volumes, sharing a truck with other moves lowers the price if your date is flexible.

How to lower the cost of removals to France

Sort out before you pack

Every cubic metre you sell or donate is a cubic metre you do not pay to move.

Be flexible on dates

Mid-month and outside July and August is usually cheaper.

Pack yourself

A packing service saves time, but packing your own boxes lowers the price.

Get a fixed price

A fixed-price quote protects you from surprises on moving day.
