What drives the price of your move to Italy

Volume

The cubic metres you move set the vehicle and crew. A two-bed flat typically costs 15 to 20 percent more than a one-bed flat on the same route.

Distance and route

Milan is about 500 km from Munich, Rome about 1,500 km from Berlin. Routes cross the Alps, usually via the Brenner pass, which adds tolls.

Access at both addresses

Historic city centres have limited traffic zones (ZTL). The truck needs access authorisation, and narrow streets can mean a smaller shuttle van.

Date and flexibility

Month-end and summer dates book out first. A flexible collection window makes it easier to plan the truck and lowers the price.

What is different about moving to Italy

Limited traffic zones

Most city centres, including Milan, Rome and Florence, are ZTL zones. Access authorisation for the moving truck is arranged before moving day.

Alpine crossing

Tolls for the Brenner or Swiss tunnels are part of the price. Winter weather can add a day.

Older buildings

Many flats have narrow stairwells and small lifts. An external furniture lift helps on upper floors.

Registration

Register your residence at the local comune (anagrafe) after you arrive. You also need an Italian tax code (codice fiscale).

From the UK

Moving to Italy from the UK

Since Brexit a move from the UK to Italy is a move from outside the EU. Your household goods go through customs, so you need a detailed inventory list.

The calculator also works for UK addresses. Enter your postcode as the start address.

Duty-free household goods

Used personal belongings are normally free of import duty under transfer of residence relief if Italy becomes your main home.

The Channel crossing

The crossing via Calais or the Eurotunnel adds a fare. The full trip to Rome usually takes two to three days.

Part loads

For small volumes, sharing a truck with other moves lowers the price if your date is flexible.

How to lower the cost of removals to Italy

Sort out before you pack

Every cubic metre you sell or donate is a cubic metre you do not pay to move.

Be flexible on dates

Mid-month and outside July and August is usually cheaper.

Pack yourself

A packing service saves time, but packing your own boxes lowers the price.

Get a fixed price

A fixed-price quote protects you from surprises on moving day.
