Volume
The cubic metres you move set the vehicle and crew. A two-bed flat typically costs 15 to 20 percent more than a one-bed flat on the same route.
Distance and route
Spain is one of the longest routes in Europe: about 1,800 km from Munich to Barcelona and over 2,300 km from Berlin to Madrid. Each extra day on the road adds driver time and tolls in France and Spain.
Access at both addresses
Narrow streets in old towns, no lift or a long walk from the truck add time. In Barcelona and Madrid the space in front of your door is usually reserved with a temporary no-parking zone.
Date and flexibility
Month-end and summer dates book out first. A flexible collection window makes it easier to plan the truck and lowers the price.
What is different about moving to Spain
Temporary no-parking zone
Barcelona and Madrid issue a permit for a temporary no-parking zone so the truck can stop at your door. It is applied for about two weeks before moving day and listed in your fixed-price quote.
Long transit
Plan three to four days door to door. Keep documents, medicine and a few days of clothes with you.
Summer heat
July and August are hot and busy. Spring and autumn moves are easier on your furniture and often cheaper.
Register on arrival
EU citizens staying longer than three months register at the Oficina de Extranjería or police station and receive a registration certificate with their NIE number.
Moving to Spain from the UK
Since Brexit a move from the UK to Spain is a move from outside the EU. Your household goods go through customs, and you need a detailed inventory list.
The calculator also works for UK addresses. Enter your postcode as the start address.
Duty-free household goods
Transfer of residence relief lets you bring used personal belongings into Spain without import duty if you move your main home there.
The Channel crossing
A ferry or Eurotunnel fare is added, and the trip often takes one day longer.
Part loads
Your goods share a truck with other moves, which lowers the price if your date is flexible.
How to lower the cost of removals to Spain
Sort out before you pack
Every cubic metre you sell or donate is a cubic metre you do not pay to move.
Be flexible on dates
Mid-month and outside July and August is usually cheaper.
Pack yourself
A packing service saves time, but packing your own boxes lowers the price.
Get a fixed price
A fixed-price quote protects you from surprises on moving day.
Consider a part load
If you move a small volume and can wait a few days, sharing a truck is often the cheapest option to Spain.
