Volume
The cubic metres you move set the vehicle and crew. A two-bed flat typically costs 15 to 20 percent more than a one-bed flat on the same route.
Distance and route
Amsterdam is about 460 km from Hamburg and 850 km from Munich. Most routes need one driving day.
Access at both addresses
Dutch canal houses have steep, narrow stairs. Furniture often goes in through the window with a hoist or furniture lift, which needs to be planned.
Date and flexibility
Month-end and summer dates book out first. A flexible collection window makes it easier to plan the truck and lowers the price.
What is different about moving to the Netherlands
Furniture hoists
Many older houses have a hoisting beam on the facade, and an external lift is used. Tell us which floor you live on.
Temporary no-parking zone
Amsterdam and other cities issue an exemption (ontheffing) so the moving truck can stop in front of your building. Apply early, about two weeks ahead.
Registration
If you stay longer than four months, register with your municipality (gemeente) within five days of arrival to get a BSN number.
No customs inside the EU
Moving within the EU needs no customs declaration for household goods.
Moving to the Netherlands from the UK
Since Brexit a move from the UK to the Netherlands is a move from outside the EU. Your household goods go through customs, so you need a detailed inventory list.
The calculator also works for UK addresses. Enter your postcode as the start address.
Duty-free household goods
Used personal belongings are normally free of import duty under transfer of residence relief if the Netherlands becomes your main home.
The crossing
Direct North Sea ferries to Rotterdam or Hook of Holland are a practical alternative to Calais.
Part loads
For small volumes, sharing a truck with other moves lowers the price if your date is flexible.
How to lower the cost of removals to the Netherlands
Sort out before you pack
Every cubic metre you sell or donate is a cubic metre you do not pay to move.

Mid-month and outside July and August is usually cheaper.
Pack yourself
