Volume
The cubic metres you move set the vehicle and crew. A two-bed flat typically costs 15 to 20 percent more than a one-bed flat on the same route.
Distance and route
Germany is central, so most European routes are short. Moves from Spain or Portugal are the long exception, at around 2,000 km.
Access at both addresses
German cities expect a temporary no-parking zone for the moving truck. Without it, the crew may park far from your door and loading takes longer.
Date and flexibility
Month-end and summer dates book out first. A flexible collection window makes it easier to plan the truck and lowers the price.
What is different about moving to Germany
Temporary no-parking zone
In Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and most cities the city issues a permit for a temporary no-parking zone (Halteverbotszone) in front of your building. It is applied for about two weeks ahead and the signs go up before moving day.
Register within 14 days
Everyone who moves into a flat in Germany registers the address at the local citizens office (Bürgeramt). You need a confirmation from your landlord (Wohnungsgeberbestätigung).
Quiet hours
Many buildings have house rules about noise on Sundays and public holidays. Plan moving day for a weekday or Saturday.
No customs inside the EU
Moving within the EU needs no customs declaration for household goods.
Moving to Germany from the UK
Since Brexit a move from the UK to Germany is a move from outside the EU. Your household goods go through German customs, so you need a detailed inventory list.
The calculator also works for UK addresses. Enter your postcode as the start address.
Duty-free household goods
Used belongings are free of import duty if Germany becomes your main home. You apply with customs form 0350 (application for relief for removal goods).
The crossing
Most routes go via Calais or a ferry to the Netherlands. London to Berlin usually takes two days.
Part loads
For small volumes, sharing a truck with other moves lowers the price if your date is flexible.
How to lower the cost of removals to Germany
Sort out before you pack
Every cubic metre you sell or donate is a cubic metre you do not pay to move.
Be flexible on dates
Mid-month and outside July and August is usually cheaper.
Pack yourself
A packing service saves time, but packing your own boxes lowers the price.

A fixed-price quote protects you from surprises on moving day.
